Depression can hit anyone at any time in their lives.
The sad thing is, most of us have no real experience dealing with it, and usually end up making it worse. How we deal with it is what matters most!
We all keep hearing voices in our heads, that keep reinforcing negative thoughts. The truth is that the negatives get exaggerated, and the positives get minimised. But we tend to believe what the voices are telling us. And that makes us feel so alone in this world.
All of us have problems that were never acknowledged, issues too intimate to confide in anyone. Unresolved personal issues are the springboard from which depression usually takes stronger hold of us. That’s why it’s easier to talk to a complete stranger, it liberates us from the guilt that holds us back!
Sometimes, the only person who thinks of yourself as a failure is you. And it’s usually quite far from the truth. It’s called the Imposter Syndrome, and it’s quite common in people with above average intelligence. Check this link if you want to see what I’m talking about.
If you have been comparing yourself to your sibling/friend/cousin, and you gauge your success through the skewered lens of “greater than” or “less than”, then prepare to be disappointed. Your life is to be lived, not a race to be won. Do not place useless and unrealistic expectations on yourself. It will backfire, and in serious cases it may lead you to depression.
What If.. This is a loaded question. What If I had taken a different path 10 years ago? What if I hadn’t done this? What if I had done that? There are so many things we want to change. As we keep getting older(and hopefully wiser ☺), the list of “What If”s will only grow longer. Most of us learn to snap out of it and get on with our lives. And I think it’s a good thing too. Looking into the past will take us nowhere but down.
Depression, left untreated, usually leads to suicidal thoughts. There are many resources out there to help you deal with it. The Semicolon project is one of them, it aims to be a source of support for people going through this difficult phase. The project describes it’s motto as follows..
A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.
A powerful message, one that needs to be spread far and wide. The taboo associated with it is - in our minds as well as the world outside - what makes it so dangerous. People go through this breathtakingly painful experience all by themselves, convinced that no one else can understand any of it.
The first step is to acknowledge that you are going through something. And seek professional help. It is the fastest way to recovery. Let’s overcome together. Ask for help when you need it. Who knows, some day you might even help others who are where you once were!
The progress that we made everyday may not seem like much, but if we keep at it the result at the end will be substantial!

A funny thing about taking steps towards your goal is that eventually you get there. The trick is to keep taking those smaller steps while keeping a positive attitude about the progress you’re making. It’s harder to do than it sounds because often these steps are not glamorous and it feels like you’re not getting anywhere. It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and where you’re going. But as long as you keep taking the steps you’ll achieve something bigger than the sum of those steps.
